weasels ripped my flesh American Mink at Susquehannock Wildlife Center

Every day we are amazed at the diversity of species found on the beautiful 20 acres that the Susquehannock Wildlife Center calls home. Hopkins Branch may be a small creek but its close proximity to Deer Creek, a treasure of Harford County, creates a home for a wide variety of wildlife. One that we expected but had yet to confirm until now is the American Mink, a smaller cousin of the river otter that is a member of the weasel family. They are semi-aquatic and often found in and near various types of wetlands, eating small animals such as frogs, rodents, and fish. Best known for the luxurious pelt, they were trapped extensively for the fur trade. Since fur has gone out of fashion and captive breeding took over what of it is left, these and others have rebounded. We were very excited that at last one has decided to call our home, its home.
